Abhayrab is an inactivated, purified Vero cell rabies vaccine used to prevent rabies in people of all ages. Manufactured by the Indian Immunologicals Ltd, the vaccine works by stimulating the body's immune system to produce antibodies that fight the rabies virus. Key features

• Active ingredient: Purified lyophilized rabies antigen from the inactivated rabies virus (L. Pasteur 2061/Vero Strain).
• Mechanism: The immune system recognizes the inactivated virus as a foreign threat and produces antibodies to neutralize the rabies virus. This establishes an immunological memory, allowing the body to react quickly if later exposed to the live virus.
• Form: Abhayrab is a freeze-dried powder that is reconstituted with a diluent before injection. 

Uses and administrationAbhayrab is used for both pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure prophylaxis. 

• Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): Recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure to rabies, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, travelers to rabies-prone areas, and laboratory workers.
  • Dosage: A series of three injections, typically given on days 0, 7, and 21 or 28.
• Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP): Administered after a bite or other exposure to a potentially rabid animal. When used in conjunction with prompt and thorough wound cleaning and, in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin, it is highly effective.
  • Dosage: A series of five injections, typically given on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28.
  • Prior vaccination: If a person was previously vaccinated, only two booster doses are required for post-exposure treatment.
